The Incorporated Village of East Hampton was the area of initial settlement in East Hampton Town and remains to some extent the center of the town. Founded in 1648 by English farmers, East Hampton remained a quiet farming community until the late 1800s, when it began to develop as a resort for the wealthy upper class from New York City.
