*The village of greenport has quite a unique history when it comes to their law enforcement. In a rare move, the residents of Greenport voted to disband their nine-member police department, a move that became effective on Nov. 17, 1994. The department, which was established in 1947, was shut down following a grand jury investigation into a series of scandals that concluded the department was corrupt, incompetent, and unable to police itself. Since the shutdown, police services have been provided by the Southold Town Police.
